Support and Challenge

At EMS, we believe that all children should approach learning with a sense of joy and possibility and our expert faculty and staff do everything that they can to foster children's belief in their innate abilities, while challenging them to improve upon their strengths and develop in those areas that do not come as easily or naturally.

We do this utilizing an approach that allows for differentiation in all our classes. This means, for example, our early childhood teachers demonstrate a firm grasp on where their students are developmentally and which academic skills they are ready to master.  Our lower school teachers understand the importance of attending to students' social-emotional needs, creating a comfort zone where they welcome new academic challenges. Our middle school teachers respect their students' budding autonomy while providing important support and skills-building in areas such as time management, organization, leadership, and navigating adolescence.

In Little School (first through fourth grade) our Step Ahead Program provides an innovative evidence-based multi-sensory reading program  for students who need additional assistance to read accurately and fluently. We also utilize the Wilson Fundations program, a multi-sensory, structured, systematic, and sequenced approach to reading instruction. Instruction focuses on phonemic awareness, decoding, accuracy, fluency, comprehension, and automatic word recognition of spelling and sight words. Students receive one-to-one attention to address their individual needs.

We offer performance-based mathematics groups in middle school, and have successfully guided students whose abilities were beyond a standard middle school math curriculum. We also offer guided study and a full-complement of academic support in middle school to help children with identified learning challenges reach their fullest potential and gain mastery of our challenging curriculum.
